On Sunday evenings, all our residents attend Celebrate Recovery Sarasota, a faith-based 12-Step program designed to help individuals overcome hurts, hang-ups, and habits. With diverse topics, worship bands, guest speakers, and more, Celebrate Recovery brings Sarasota’s recovery community together and strengthens the bonds that encourage new beginnings. They’re finding jobs, going to meetings, and learning how to live and enjoy life sober. Shelter programs can provide temporary yet often critical survival services, too, including serving as an entry point for identifying and supporting placement and connection to social and health services. There remains an insufficient supply of immediate and low-barrier access emergency shelters,39,40 especially non-congregate shelters, that do not require alcohol and drug testing for admission. Early in his recovery, Alan met many other men striving to stay sober. Alone, it was almost impossible for the men to put all of the pieces in their lives back together. Alan and a core group of recovery friends moved into our first Purpose House. As the men grew and recovered, the developed a model of living that combines 12-step meetings, faith, and accountability. Their success grew and Alan slowly opened more Purpose Houses.

Living with others in recovery creates a sense of community. Sharing experiences, offering advice, and supporting each other makes the journey less lonely and more encouraging. Using the Substance Use Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Services (SUPTRS) block grant to fund RSS delivered by certified and employed recovery residence staff.
